The shop was the brainchild of Levi Isaac, a vintage lover himself, who stumbled upon the micro-community of antique glasses while looking for a pair for himself. He was struck by the quality and character of each pair he encountered, down to the turn of the century, gold fill Windsor frames he sports. "You can tell that these glasses were crafted, not produced," said Isaac, "each frame is perfectly unique, with a story to match."
In 2009, Isaac began reselling the frames, some dating as far back as 1850, out of his Brooklyn apartment using online sites like Ebay and Etsy.He quickly came across a thriving niche market. Many websites were offering reproductions of the classic cat eye, pince-nez, and horn-rim frames, but very few were offering the real thing. With this in mind, Isaac aimed to create a user-friendly website that offered authentic vintage eyewear at affordable prices - the average frames retails at about $100.
Most of the eyeglasses are purchased in lots from antique dealers. Once received, Isaac carefully sorts them, checking for quality and imperfections before ultrasonically polishing them. Many of the frames were found in abandoned warehouses, some still in their original packaging and tags. Some of the rarer pairs are found in flea markets and auctions. The glasses are fit for everyday wear, and ready for prescription or sunglass lenses.
